Study Visit to Switzerland – Exchange of Experiences in the Context of Civil Society Development

From September 16 to 20, 2024, as part of the implementation of the Civil Engagement programme, co-financed by the second Swiss Contribution, representatives of the Government Office for Cooperation with NGOs and the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds visited the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

During the visit to Bern, Fribourg, and Burgdorf, meetings were held with numerous stakeholders in the context of Swiss civil society, with an emphasis on cooperation between federal, cantonal, and local authorities and civil society organizations with the aim of promoting civic engagement. Civil society is an integral part of the Swiss system of direct democracy, as evidenced by successful citizen initiatives that have led to legislative changes. Additionally, civil society organizations contribute to the common good by providing social services, for example, through care for the elderly and the integration of immigrants, and are important partners not only in the public but also in the private sector. For instance, Migros, one of the largest Swiss retail chains, supports socially beneficial micro-projects with grants.

Through meetings with representatives of Swiss civil society organizations, opportunities for volunteering and ways to promote volunteering in the Swiss Confederation were highlighted, which is particularly useful for the Government Office for Cooperation with NGOs given that part of the financial support within the Civil Engagement programme will be aimed at strengthening volunteering in the Republic of Croatia. Furthermore, the exchange of experiences with Swiss institutions will contribute to more effective programme management and better support for applicants and beneficiaries of grants within the second Swiss Contribution.
